This report records 10 cases of lung cancer detected among patients with asbestosis and the results of cohort survey, held in 1957 and 1972, in Sennan district, Osaka Prefecture, Japan.
The incidence of lung cancer in patients with various pneumoconioses who were admitted to our hospital was also analysed. Of 40 patients with asbestosis, 10 cases (25.0%) were complicated with lung cancer, while 13 (4. 7%) of 279 cases with silicosis and 5(9. 4%) of 53 cases with other pneumoconioses such as talcosis, pyrophyllitosis, graphytosis, almina or arch ´elder pneumoconioses and so on were found to have lung cancer. These results showed lung cancer to be associated more frequently with asbestosis than with silicosis or other pneumoconioses. We discussed on the specific affairs of asbestos industry in Sennan district.
